Jing, Toronto

I recently dined at Jing, a modern Chinese restaurant that certainly knows how to elevate traditional dishes. One standout item was the Peking duck. At $50, it’s not the cheapest option, but it’s absolutely worth the price. The duck had perfectly crispy skin and tender meat that was incredibly flavorful. The pancakes that came with it were soft and paired beautifully with the hoisin sauce and thinly sliced veggies, though I did wish there was a little more sauce to really soak everything in. Still, the dish felt like a polished version of the classic, and it really impressed.

The fresh lobster with fries was another dish that stood out—though it’s not something you see every day. The lobster itself was fresh, sweet, and perfectly cooked, and paired with crispy, golden fries that added a fun contrast to the richness of the seafood. It’s a bit of an odd combo, but surprisingly, it worked. If anything, I’d have liked the fries to be a little more seasoned, but they were still addictively crispy.

Overall, Jing does a great job blending the traditional and the contemporary, and if you’re in the mood for something a little different, it’s definitely worth a visit.
